#76 | Mothership, San Diego, USA

Last Visit: Spring 2024

For tiki fans, San Diego is something of a pilgrimage site. Among classics like the Grass Skirt and countless other cocktail bars - even those not steeped in exotic charm - one place stands out in particular: Mothership. While other venues try to transport you to a fictional world somewhere between the Caribbean and the Pacific, Mothership sends you straight on a vacation to another planet. And that's exactly where one of my most unusual nights out at a bar ever began.

After a visit to the aforementioned Grass Skirt, my Tiki mission took me all over San Diego. I spent the night with José, a friendly Mexican with a remarkable collection of stories - and also our Uber driver - who took me through this fascinating city to the Mothership, where I'd already reserved a spot at the bar for 10 p.m. But even before I opened the door, the evening took an unexpected turn.

Outside the entrance, I met two young Americans who, as it turned out, had actually reserved a table for three. Their third friend had backed out at the last minute, and after a few minutes of chatting, we found a solution: I was promptly declared the missing member of their group and was allowed to join them at the table instead of taking my seat at the bar. What began as a chance encounter turned into one of those evenings you just can't plan beforehand. Hours later, we were still hitting up various bars and pubs around the city together. The connection and our shared love for this iconic part of bar culture continues to this day.

The moment you walk in, it's clear that the Mothership isn't meant to be just any ordinary tiki bar. The venue's story revolves around a crashed spaceship whose crew was forced to make an emergency landing on a mysterious planet and eventually established a permanent tropical colony there. What at first sounds like a crazy idea, straight out of a B-movie sci-fi flick from days gone by, is brought to life inside with impressive consistency. The walls look like caves from another world. Everywhere, crystals and strange plants glow in vibrant colors.

The ceiling sparkles like a starry sky; nothing reminds you of the distant outside world. Instead of bamboo huts and fishing nets, the space is dominated by otherworldly landscapes, psychedelic light installations, spaceship-like metal, and futuristic shapes. Yet beneath all this sci-fi veneer, you can sense the soul of a real tiki bar: escapism, fantasy, and the desire to flee everyday life for a few hours.

Even the drink menu makes it clear that no one here has taken the easy way out. Instead of a classic cocktail menu, you get something that's more reminiscent of a spaceship's technical manual: cocktails from the onboard computer. Amid drawings, diagrams, and cryptic labels, you choose your next course through the galaxy - all designed with high-quality, cohesive aesthetics without veering into kitsch (see below). The selection is also typically Tiki-bar-sized - on the larger side, with over 25 drinks, including 8 non-alcoholic signature cocktails - which is quite impressive. Equally impressive is the bar food (see photo above) - whether South American, Asian, or Caribbean-inspired, the selection spans entire categories, from homemade, unique soft-serve ice cream to lemon pepper tofu, carrot orange miso cake, paella, and hearty pancakes. At the end of the menu, there's a "souvenir section", featuring crystal lamps like the ones scattered across the bar tables, as well as ceramic bowls and pitchers for making Tiki drinks at home, sweatshirts, and even a vinyl record with the Mothership "soundtrack". It's almost as if a whole Mothership universe à la Marvel is being built here.

Astro Zombie

| Aged Caribbean Rum
| 151 Demerara Rum
| Stroh 160 Austrian Rum

| Amaro Meletti
| Grapefruit
| Lime

| Cinnamon
| Cherry Grenadine
| Passion Fruit

| Absinthe

That evening, I decided to start with the Astro Zombie. It was bold, complex, and had that exotic depth you'd expect from a modern tiki drink. Of course, the numerous ingredients that added extra spices and flavor, such as Amaro, two types of overproof rum, additional cinnamon, and absinthe, certainly helped. It was a highly expanded yet exceptionally well-executed take on the classic Zombie cocktail.

Wormhole

| Mezcal
| Stroh 160 Austrian Rum
| Licor de Elote

| Coconut Cream
| Caramel Butter
| Lime

| Lemon
| Candied Orange

Next came the Wormhole and what a finale that was. The drink felt like the perfect way to wrap up an already surreal evening. Presentation, flavor, and atmosphere blended into a single experience, even though the two cocktails shown here are actually among the more understated ones in terms of garnish and glass/mug. Smoky notes and exotic sweetness were perfectly balanced with crisp acidity and a wonderful mouthfeel. It's one of those cocktails that you don't just drink, it's one you'll still remember years later when you're thinking about "ideal tiki drinks" while experimenting on your own at home.

As impressive as the decor and the drinks were, my strongest memory of the Mothership isn't the glowing crystals, the alien caves, or the science-fiction story. It's the people. Foreign worlds and new friends. A chance conversation at the door led me to spend the entire evening with two strangers who are no longer strangers at all. It's exactly these kinds of encounters that make traveling special. And perhaps that fits perfectly with the story of the Mothership: stranded travelers who find a community somewhere in a foreign land.

The Mothership is one of the most creative bars I've ever visited. It's not a classic tiki bar - nor does it aim to be one. Instead, it takes the basic idea of tiki escapism and catapults it at warp speed into the depths of space. The spectacular design, the imaginative cocktails, the very friendly service, and the cohesive theme turn every visit into a mini-expedition. But for me, the biggest surprise wasn't on the menu or in a glass - it was right outside the front door. Sometimes, all it takes is an open seat at a table for three to turn a good night out at a bar into a memory that lasts a lifetime.
