Plain Sailing

A complex and elegant drink with manzanilla and sloe gin, to name just two of the many ingredients. As PUNCH Magazine writes, it could have been made in Harry Craddock's day with the old school ingredient list, but it also works wonderfully today. [...]

Bar 1802, Hotel Monte Cristo, Paris, France

Hotel bars in Paris have had their share of extravagant and opulent examples, one of which we have also visited during our last trip. Yet, Bar 1802 takes a more specialized route, a journey, that leads to (a lot of) Rum and multisensory cocktails. The Hotel Monte Cristo itself invites with a quieter luxury on the other side of the Seine, in between apartment buildings, with a lot of greenery on the hotel facade. [...]

Savage Islands

A very nice, somewhat atypical exotic specimen. Tiki but in very light and fresh, therefore also in the first, "Fresh & Lively" category in the "Welcome Home" book by Death & Co. I would have liked a little more bite, but if you are using several citrus fruits while mixing anyway, I would advise splitting this one between lemon and lime. [...]

Rainwater Madeira / Pineapple / Lemon / Angostura Bitters / IPA Beer

Kentucky River (aka Fox River)

A nice Old Fashioned twist, with an unusual combination of ingredients from one of my most beloved, underrated bar books. That sounds promising, and it delivered on that promise. As it seems to have two names according to the book, it's probably an older drink, unfortunately there are no sources of origin in the Everleigh book. [...]

Bourbon / Crème de Cacao / Peach Bitters

Liquid Garden, Hamburg, Germany

As I sat down and opened my laptop to write another article, the question arose: which bar from Hamburg do we want to discuss next? Because we actually like to alternate absolute highlights with simply “quite nice” bars, let alone the rare actual failures. Spoiler: We'll make an exception here. [...]

Athens Café Guide

I don't believe it is even possible to sum up and rephrase the coffee culture of a city such as Athens, and a country, such as Greece. Much like in Italy or Turkey, coffee is a cultural pillar of the local community. It is therefore all the more difficult to present any kind of 'guide' or recommendation for Athens, but we do try to write a little about the places we did visit. […]
